Essay Topic
How can a brand respond when an apparently humorous message is interpreted as dismissive of its audience?
CONTEXT
This essay analyses Toly Bread’s 2025 mooncake advertising controversy using attribution theory, Situational Crisis Communication Theory, and the situational theory of publics.
ANALYSIS
I reconstructed the escalation from early consumer comments to wider social-media criticism, then evaluated the brand’s initial defensive response and later apology. I compared the response with crisis and stakeholder theories, separating tone, channel, timing, and responsibility.
KEY INSIGHT
The crisis was not caused only by one insensitive line. It exposed a wider failure to listen to early audience feedback, clarify responsibility, and connect public apology with internal communication reform.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The recommendations extended beyond message repair to a review of past marketing materials, stronger internal gatekeeping, and a culture that gives younger employees meaningful voice.
